In the absence of anything better to talk about, a good conversational starting point is always the weather. So, let's try that here. It's getting cold, isn't it? They keep talking about the unseasonably warm weather drawing to a close, and a cold snap coming our way. Frosty car windscreens, ice on the pavement, perhaps even some snow... so, make sure that you wrap up warm, won't you.
What has this got to do with Oxford music, you may ask? Well, very little, admittedly, but let's try to crowbar in some connections. Picture the scene, it's chilly, you're out walking, wrapped up in a scarf, gloves and hat. Underneath the hat, maybe, you've got headphones on, and you're listening to some music?
Perhaps Fixers' Imperial Goddess of Mercy (fixerstheband.com), which this week we saw as laying the groundwork for "a humdinger of a debut album coming down the line"? Or maybe one of Oxford's many, many other musicians and bands, any of whom, coincidentally, you can now put forward as the support act for Graham Coxon's Oxford gig in April (toursupport.grahamcoxon.co.uk)?
Perhaps you're listening to some releases from local label Big Scary Monsters (www.bsmrocks.com), who just announced that they'll be putting out a picture disc vinyl edition of legendary US band Cursive's latest album, or you're enjoying a bit of alt-folk legend Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, who'll be appearing at the Bullingdon in Oxford in May, or maybe you're listening to folk music to prepare yourself for the Oxford Folk Weekend in April, tickets for which have just gone on sale (www.folkweekendoxford.co.uk)?
Whatever it is you're doing, and listening to, do keep warm. The warm glow generated by living in a town with so much musical excitement and activity should help. Read full reviews of the latest releases, and find out loads more about Oxford bands, music and gigs, at MusicInOxford.co.uk
