So here we are then, 2012. What will it bring? Can it be as busy and productive a year for Oxford music as 2011? The great thing is, it probably can. Our city seems in a very healthy musical state right now, with all kinds of good things going on, and a lot of people contributing to a diverse and exceptionally high quality scene.
Last year saw some much-loved acts calling it a day, including Huck And The Handsome Fee, ute and The Winchell Riots, some local bands grabbing more and more attention beyond Oxford - not least Fixers, Alphabet Backwards, Secret Rivals and Spring Offensive - and Stornoway, Foals, Jonquil, Chad Valley and Bellowhead bringing the Oxford spirit to every corner of the world.
The sad news that Truck festival saw its last outing in 2011 is hard to deal with, but at least Truck Store on Cowley Road remains and puts on a variety of regular in-store performances. Jon Spira's Oxford music documentary Anyone Can Play Guitar finally saw the light of day with a release tour around the country, and it's now available on DVD - it's essential viewing for anybody interested in just why Oxford has such a great music scene. Here's to 2011, then - a great year, and one that confirms that Oxford continues to punch way above its musical weight.
