What's on the MusicInOxford.co.uk stereo this week?

A couple of new releases recently show some of the many different facets of Oxfordshire music.

The eponymous EP by Peerless Pirates (www.peerlesspirates.com) is the latest set of songs by this band who craft cheerful, nautical tales set to music.  While this template might restrict them in some ways, there's still variety, with touches of Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and even Lily Allen in their cheeky, jangly guitar pop music.

The new EP from Trev Williams (www.trevwilliams.co.uk), Keep Singing, continues the straightforward, positive vibe of his earlier work, but the inclusion of the angry, taut track You Cut, We Bleed reveals him as an increasingly talented singer-songwriter. Oxford boys gone global Stornoway (www.stornoway.eu) have affirmed their love of animal life by releasing a new track, You Don't Know Anything, through the Patagonia Music Collective project.  All profits from its sales will be donated to the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust.

Finally, some interesting live shows on the horizon - Oxford Playhouse (www.oxfordplayhouse.com) present Micromusic on September 8, a musician-curated evening of works for chamber ensemble and electronics, preceded on September 6 by a presentation of Mark-Anthony Turnage's opera Greek, based on the play by Steven Berkoff.

More imminent than that is the first in MusicInOxford.co.uk's new monthly gig series, which will see Dive Dive, Richard Walters, Seabuckthorn and Nottingham's Kogumaza grace the stage of the Wheatsheaf on Friday, August 19, to mark 10 years of MusicInOxford.co.uk.
