For the first time since 1968, Oxford University has re-appointed its rugby captain for a second year running.
Former Sale Sharks and Leicester player John Carter will lead the Dark Blues again in 2012 after captaining them to victory over Cambridge in the 130th Varsity game 28-10 last month. Carter gained his first Blue in 2009 when he ended up on the losing side at Twickenham, and then took a year away from playing and was team manager during the successful 2010 campaign.
The last skipper to be re-elected for consecutive terms was Robert Phillips, in 1967 and 1968.
The experienced number eight helped the Dark Blues to a 29-10 win over an RAF side at Iffley Road last week in their first match of 2012.Prop Lewis Anderson, winger Matt Janney, Carter and JJ Dargan all got on the scoresheet in a comprehensive victory in which Oxford blooded a number of young players.
