Redknapp lost £250,000 in abortive U's takeover

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp lent £250,000 to a man hoping to takeover Oxford United, a court has heard.

Redknapp, 64, of Poole in Dorset, and Milan Mandarić, 73, of Oadby, Leicestershire, are charged with two counts of cheating the public revenue.  The charges relate to payments of £189,000 Redknapp allegedly received while manager of Portsmouth.

Today, the court heard that Redknapp had given the money to a businessman after being approached by an associate in the football industry, and had never been paid back.  HSBC's Alan Hills, who was Mr Redknapp's relationships manager at the bank, confirmed the exchange when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court today.

The trial continues.
