ATHLETICS: Oxford City AC junior Simi Fajemisin struck double gold at the South of England Indoor Athletics Championships at Lee Valley in Enfield.
The 14-year-old claimed victory in the Under 15 girls 60m, running a personal best in the final of 7.86secs to cross the line 0.06secs ahead of Tyla Beckles, of Enfield & Haringey. Fajemisin, who ran lifetime bests in her 60m heat and semi-final, also took home the long jump title with a leap of 5.31m.
Landing 1cm short of her all-time best, Fajemisin's leap was enough to see off the challenge of second-placed Ellie Savva of Braintree whose best effort was 5.29m. Other winners over the weekend include Alice Hopkins, 13, who took bronze in the Under 15 girls 60m hurdles with a personal best of 9.78secs, some way behind winner Charlotte Williams, of Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow who crossed the line in 9.42secs.
Luisa Chantler won bronze in the Under 15 girls shot putt with a lifetime best of 9.44m, more than 3m behind winner Sophie Merritt of Southampton, who threw 12.51m. Alice Hopkins was seventh in the shot putt final with a personal best of 8.45m. Carolyn Plateau, 23, of Radley AC, took silver in the senior women's 1,500m, running a season's best of 4mins 27.27secs to cross the line behind Ceri Mitchell of Southampton in 4mins 26.98secs.
Ashley Johnson, 25, of Oxford City AC, was sixth in the 60m senior men's race in 8.49secs, but couldn't match his time of 8.45secs from the semi-final.
