Renault driver Robert Kubica has suffered another setback in his battle back from injuries sustained in a horrific rallying crash last year.
The Formula 1 man reopened a fracture in his right tibia when he fell near his apartment in Viareggio, Italy, which required further surgery. Tests on the leg at Mantova Hospital revealed that the calcification of the bone had not taken place properly following the original crash.
A pin has been inserted into the bone, and Kubica has been told to wait two to three weeks before resuming his rehabilitation work. The injury is not expected to impact Kubica's final recovery time, with the driver still waiting for nerve regrowth in his right arm and hand that could take several months.
Lotus Renault GP team principal Eric Boullier said: “Robert has shown fantastic courage and determination in his rehabilitation following the accident last year, and it is sad to hear that he has suffered this setback. On behalf of everyone at Lotus Renault GP, I would like to wish Robert a quick recovery.”
