The second phase of work to repair and improve Iffley Road is due to begin on Monday, January 9.
Following a break for Christmas and New Year, the project will resume earlier than planned between the Henley Street junction and Donnington Bridge Road. The work, which is now scheduled to finish in the summer, involves carriageway reconstruction and improvements to drainage, kerbing and footways.
A new zebra crossing will be installed near Percy Street and side-road junctions will be altered to make it easier for pedestrians to cross. The northbound cycle lane will also be extended to Donnington Bridge Road. Iffley Road will remain open throughout the work, with temporary traffic lights in place. Some side roads will be closed at certain times, and Oxfordshire County Council has advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. Some on-street parking will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the works and bus stops temporarily moved. Details of changes to bus stop locations will be given at individual stops.
Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for Transport, Councillor Rodney Rose, said: “Unfortunately a project of this scale and nature always causes disruption for motorists, local residents and businesses. However, once it’s complete, no major road reconstruction works will be required on this stretch of Iffley Road for many years.
“The good news is that we were able to finish the first phase earlier than originally planned, which means we can now crack on with the rest of the work. We hope this will mean we’re able to finish as early as possible and keep disruption to a minimum.”
