Robber jailed for attack on vulnerable man in Witney

Martin-Webb-PicA 32-year-old man from Carterton has been jailed for 15 years in connection with a robbery in Witney in May last year.

Martin George Todd, of Milestone Road, Carterton, was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday, November 25. He was found guilty after a five-day trial at Oxford Crown Court in October.

The robbery occurred during the early hours of May 20 last year, at an address in the Madley Park area of Witney. During the incident, the victim, a vulnerable man who is now aged 25, was threatened with a screwdriver, tied up and seriously assaulted, which included being hit over the head with a bottle. His bank card and various other belongings were taken. He required hospital treatment for his injuries.

Det Con Grahame Lea, investigating officer, said: “Todd carried out a prolonged and targeted attack on a defenceless man, subjecting him to extreme violence and threatening him with his life. I would like to praise the victim in this case who despite the level of violence he was subjected to and the effect this has had on his life had the strength and courage to report the matter to police and give evidence at court.

“West Oxfordshire is a very safe place to live with low levels of crime, and incidents such as these are thankfully very rare. I hope this sentence acts as a deterrent to would-be criminals and goes to show that Thames Valley Police will work tirelessly with the community to ensure that it remains a safe place to live. Dangerous individuals such as Todd will feel the full force of the law.”

A 27-year-old old man also stood trial in connection with the incident but was acquitted.
