Benefits cheat changed bank statements to cover her tracks

An Abingdon woman has been handed a six-week suspended prison sentence and 200 hours community service after pleading guilty to benefit fraud.

Tracey Jane Battell, 39, of Saxton Road, was sentenced at Didcot Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, March 10, after earlier admitting six charges of dishonestly failing to report changes to her personal circumstances affecting her benefit entitlement.

Skip hire contractor 'spoiled' Oxfordshire beauty spot

A skip hire contractor who flouted waste regulations and “spoiled” an area of outstanding natural beauty has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Geoffrey Parker, of Hundridge Farm, Ipsden Heath, near Wallingford, was found to be in contempt of court after consistently ignoring court orders at Oxford County Court on Friday, March 12.

Celebrity stalker banned from contacting stars

An ex-postman from Oxford who bombarded celebrities including American actress Meg Ryan with letters and pictures has been handed a 12-month supervision order.

Mark Taylor, previously of Arlington Drive, Marston, admitted sending messages to Ryan and other celebrities, such as Big Brother winner and DJ Kate Lawler (pictured), at Oxford Crown Court on Monday, March 15.

Anti-war Abingdon soldier jailed after going AWOL

 

A soldier from Abingdon who refused to return to Afghanistan and instead went AWOL from the army has been sent to prison for nine months.

Lance Corporal Joe Glenton, who was based at Dalton Barracks, joined the army in 2004, but absconded from the Royal Logistics’ Corp in 2007.

L/Cpl Glenton, who is originally from York, was absent without leave (AWOL) for two years and six days before he handed himself in to military authorities, during which he lived in south-east Asia and Australia...

Carterton benefit cheat claimed £42,000-plus over four years

A benefit cheat from Carterton who fraudulently claimed £42,000 has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Karen Barber, 35, of Richens Drive, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court today (February 26), for claiming housing, council tax and income support benefit she wasn’t entitled to between November 2005 and January 2009.

Barber was given an 18-month suspended prison sentence with a community order to undertake 80 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months.
