Proud parents celebrate Unit's 1,000th birth

Proud parents Catherine and Jon Spinage enjoyed a double celebration when their daughter Emily Louisa was born last week.

Entering the world at 4.48am on Thursday, March 11, the youngster weighed 5.7oz and is the couple’s first child, but the 1,000th baby born at The Spires Unit, at the John Radcliffe Hospital

Child heart surgery remains suspended at John Radcliffe Hospital

Heart surgery on children is to remain suspended at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital until August at the earliest after the deaths of four babies.

An independent review into paediatric cardiac surgical services at the hospital between January 2009 and February 2010 has been launched by the South Central Strategic Health Authority.

The report and its recommendations are set to be presented to the authority, the hospital board and families of the dead children on July 29.

Cancer research project boosted by Hallmark cash

A cancer research project at the University of Oxford has been boosted by a £25,000 donation from Hallmark Cards.

Led by Dr Madalena Tarsounas, the pioneering research project hopes to discover more about genes that are susceptible to breast cancer in a bid to develop future treatments.  The donation is part of the firm’s Cards for a Cure campaign, which has donated £1m to cancer research projects since 2007.

Oxford medical researchers praised

Leading medical researchers from Oxford have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to healthcare research.

Seven researchers from the University of Oxford and Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust have been awarded Senior Investigator status by the National Institute for Health Research.

Jog into spring in West Oxfordshire

Jog into spring by joining one of West Oxfordshire’s new jogging groups for beginners this month.

The JustJog sessions are being run by the district’s GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active) team, with sessions running for 10 weeks starting in Chipping Norton on March 17, Eynsham on March 18 and Woodstock on March 29.
