Bestselling author and Times columnist Ben Macintyre will be at Abingdon School to talk about his new novel on Thursday, February 11.
Operation Mincemeat is the true story of a bizarre World War Two deception concocted by novelists Ian Fleming and John le Carre and involving spies and a dead body. Operation Mincemeat hoodwinked the Nazi espionage chiefs, sent German troops hurtling in the wrong direction, and saved tens of thousands of lives by deploying a secret agent who was different, in one crucial respect, from any spy before or since: he was dead.
The story reads like something from one of their novels, but also gives a fascinating insight into the often bizarre and daring strategies used during World War II in the often deadly cat and mouse games played between the British and German secret services across Europe.
Mr Macintyre, a former pupil of the Park Road school, will be discussing the book from 7.30pm in the sports centre hospitality suite. Tickets for the event cost £5 including a glass of wine. To order a ticket, call Mostly Books on 01235 525880 or email books@mostly-books.co.uk
