Tonnes of rubbish cleared in Bicester blitz

Six tonnes of rubbish was swept up during a cleaning blitz in the Southwold area of Bicester.

A team of street sweepers and litter pickers collected a total of 4,170kg of recyclable waste and another 1,860kg that went to landfill.  The teams targeted small parks and alleyways blighted by large amounts of discarded sweet wrappers and drinks bottles.

Councillor George Reynolds, Cherwell District Council’s portfolio holder for environment, recreation and health, said: "This is an enormous amount of rubbish to collect in such a small area.  Whenever we ask what concerns residents the most, litter and dog fouling are always top of the list, so we do all we can to tackle it.  But if we are to keep streets in the district looking how they should, we need people to stop dropping their litter and start using the hundreds of bins provided."
