East Hendred school undergoes £3,000 makeover

School-Council-dpPupils in East Hendred are now making use of an improved playground and better equipped classrooms, following the completion of a £3,000 refurbishment project.

Children at St Amand's Primary School have their school council to thank for the new gear, after youngsters gave their views on refurbishment plans as part of a pupil consultation. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) funded the project and the work was completed over the summer holidays.

New fencing was erected around the school, all the classrooms and cloakrooms were redecorated, new flooring and internal doors were installed, new desks and chairs were bought for the classrooms and new tables were placed in the dinner hall.

Headteacher Helen Clark said: “It is wonderful that we have been able carry out so much work and I am really pleased that we are able to involve our school council in the decision making process.”

The council, made up of children from all year groups at the school, put new playground markings and a practice wall at the top of their list of refurbishment priorities.

Year six pupil, Nick Wiltshire, who is on the school council, said: “I was surprised to see it all when we came back as it has brightened up the school and I thought ‘wow.’”

The school council also helped draw up the school's behaviour policy and interviewed potential staff, including the current headteacher, who was appointed last autumn. The pupils will be showing visitors around the school during the open day on October 5 from 9am to 6pm. Anyone is invited to visit the school, chat to staff, pupils and governors.
