Talented teen footballer killed in car collision

Callum-MacKinnonA talented teen footballer from Carterton was killed in a car collision near Burford on Tuesday, September 7.

Callum MacKinnon died when the blue Citroen C3 he was travelling in on the B4020 Shilton Road between Burford and Carterton came off the road close to the Blue Cross Centre just after 5.30pm.  The vehicle collided with the verge before hitting a tree.   Mr MacKinnon, 18, was a rear seat passenger in the car and was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle and the front seat passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.  The teenager was a former player for Witney United FC, and in a statement the club said it was “saddened” to hear of his death.

The club described the youngster, who had recently left to join Cirencester Town, as a “likeable, young man who was popular both on and off the pitch. His popularity among his teammates and friends was clear from their devastated reaction after the game at Shortwood last night. Some of them had played together since they were young boys.  Our thoughts at present are with all his friends and family. Callum will be much missed by all those who knew him at Witney United FC.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and contact PC Sian Pringle of Bicester Roads Policing Department on 08458 505505.
