Free workshops are being held to help parents organize playing sessions for children in residential streets.
Playing Out Project workshops provide advice and information on how to work with neighbours, a step-by-step guide to applying for a temporary road closure from the local authority, how to publicising events and guidance on how to safely steward a session.
The first Oxford Playing Out session was held in Campbell Road in Iffley last autumn, and organisers hope to encourage more parents to take to the streets in 2012.
Alice Ferguson, Playing Out co-founder, said: ““We are all looking forward to the evenings getting lighter and that’s the time when our children can get out in the fresh air and enjoy playing outdoors more. Playing Out is a wonderful way for children to play with friends in their own street and feel part of their neighbourhood in a new way.
“Organising a Playing Out session is really straightforward and the workshops will guide people through this. In addition we will be on hand to give individual support to anyone keen to get started on their street.”
Free workshops are taking place on Saturday, January 21 at Donnington Doorstep Children’s Centre, from 11am to 1pm, and at All Saints Hall, on New High Street in Headington, from 3pm until 5pm. On Friday, February 10, a workshop will be held in Marston Northway Children’s Centre from 1.15pm until 2.45pm. All workshops have a crèche available on booking.
